Top 10 Seo Mistakes And What To Do To Correct It

By Anthony Yap

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a set of methods aimed at improving the ranking of a website in search engine listings (Wikipedia)

This definition of SEO sounds simple, but beware! Search engine optimization is a minefield, even for professionals, and although necessary to a business, should not be undertaken lightly. Below, is a brief look at the top 10 mistakes and how to correct them.

1. Non-Relevant Linkage. External links to your site play a large part in most of the major search engine algorithms and can be considered an endorsement of your site. But if you are being linked to from sites that have no relevance to your content, then that is now considered a negative endorsement and will not raise your ranking in the search engines. Ensure all links to your pages are from relevant sites. Be wary of link builders who acquire links from gambling, pharmaceutical or adult themed sites, especially if your site is not of the same theme. Link building is as much a science as it is an art, one we take very seriously.

2. Untargeted Keywords. The people who use search engines are normal people who are not likely to use words used in advertising brochures. Get to know how your customers ask for your services/products and use these in your content. Often times, actual keyword research will surprise you.

3. Excessive Graphics and Flash Content. This looks good on a web page, but to Search Engine crawlers it means little. Search engines are looking for content and keywords and relevancy to the search terms. By all means have some graphics, but dont forget the meat. This doesnt mean Flash designed websites are bad necessarily. In fact, some big businesses do use it. For most webmasters though, Flash sites are best avoided. Unless your Flash designer does high-end websites and knows how to integrate the content and keywords within the Flash, hybrid sites combining Flash headers with HTML content will be a good option.

4. Believing all search engines are the same. What pleases Yahoo might not necessarily please MSN or Google. Optimize your content, keywords, inbound links, and internal linking structure so that there is something for at least one of the three top search engines.

5. Multiple Search Engine Submissions. In the very early days of search engines, this technique may have had some success, but now it can lead to slower indexing and rankings. A site with inbound links from other sites will get indexed naturally and search engine submission is not necessary. In fact, multiple submissions may be construed as an attempt to spam the search engines. The top 5 engines account for more than 90% of all activity so it is wise not to ruin your chances of ranking naturally in the search results (comScore Media Metrix qSearch data, August 2005)

6. Incorrect Use of Title Tags. Most people consider the title to be for their company name or product. Not so. You must include your most important search phrases within your title tag and if you do want your company name there, keep it for the end. Keep the title tag to less than 65 characters long to avoid the appearance of title tag keyword-stuffing.

7. Use of Black Hat techniques. Techniques such as doorway pages, hidden text, and overstuffing keywords may have had success in the past but now they will earn you penalties and could even get you banned. Avoid them altogether if you are seeking long term success. Some black hat techniques can work on a short term basis, but in the long run prove very costly.

8. Expecting Immediate Results. SEO is an ongoing process and should be treated as such by your SEO company. Good optimization will involve building good links with quality sites and this takes time.

9. Use of Unethical SEO Consultants. Beware the consultant that guarantees rankings with no past clients to back it up with or claims of special relationships with search engines. Many such "consultants" or "experts" will probably take your money and run. Choose a reputable SEO consultant, one who will keep in regular contact with progress reports and updates.

10. Decide to do optimization in-house. Probably possible in the past, but now with ever increasing sophistication of search engine algorithms, this is an area best left to an expert. Furthermore, the good SEO experts usually have other income streams from their online marketing activities and a regular paycheck to work full-time simply doesn't justify their time invested. We've yet to meet a good SEO who doesn't have virtual real estate bringing in a nice chunk of cash.

SEO SERVICE AND WEB DEVELOPMENT

What an Internet user may not be aware of is that every time they enter a keyword search phrase on a search engine like Google, Yahoo or MSN, there are hundreds of thousands of websites competing for this keyword phrase. Its there for imperative to do everything possible to get web pages listed within the top 20 twenty results, this is the first 2 pages displayed by the search engines, as a general rule of thumb 10 websites are listed on each page generated by the search engines. Internet user may not be aware of it, but every time they look at the results page after conducting a web search, they will show a tendency to visit only the websites listed on the first two pages

Because user traffic is essential in the success of a website, many website owners and web development specialists who are serious about doing business on the Internet will do everything they can do to get top rankings in search engines. The most effective strategy in achieving this is by submitting the website to search engine optimisation (SEO), and usually by hiring an SEO firm to do the SEO service for them.

How does an SEO firm carry out the SEO services that it offers? SEO services are always two-fold, and these two sides always go hand in hand. One side involves on-page SEO, while the other deals with off-page SEO.

When we speak of on-page SEO services, we are talking about how an SEO firm would optimise the content of the website itself. The articles on the website are written in such a way that they contain the keywords relevant to what the website is all about. The keywords are also imbedded in the alt tags and the meta-tags used in coding the website. Keywords are important because these are among the components that search engines look for when they read a website.

Off-page SEO services, on the other hand, involve link building. Search engines also judge how relevant a website is to certain set of keywords entered by a user based on the links that a webpage contains pertaining to those keywords, as well as the quality of those links. In order to attain this, SEO firms work on link building and link exchanges for the websites that they developing.

Because of the tightness of the competition on the Internet for top search engine rankings, SEO services are in demand and running an SEO firm is turning out to be a very lucrative business. An SEO firm can easily promise top rankings for any client"s website; the question is: Would the SEO firm be able to deliver it?

A website owner should always be careful in picking an SEO firm that will perform the SEO services that he requires. Track record and reliability are the necessary qualities that all SEO firms must have. Choosing the right SEO firm to conduct the needed SEO services can make or break the success of a website.

Top 12 SEO Tips for 2007

by Gary R. Beal

1. SEO Content – Regular, frequent and high quality content produced by people with knowledge in the field, or people that you can trust to do their homework before jumping headfirst into writing it. This is crucial both at the search engine algo level and the PPC campaign design level. And its not just a fresh article once a month. If you examine your log files you will see how often the SERP's comeback to visit. Once you are in good with them, they hit your site 1-3+ times a day. It will only do this if it sees fresh content, via your navigation. There is a point at which the bots will and won't come back and crawl. They won't if they don't see fresh content. They will come back to your index (homepage) to find the fresh content, if they don't find it they will leave. If they do find fresh content they will continue to navigate throughout your site via the 'proper' navigation mentioned in this list below. Fresh content throughout your entire site is costly and time-consuming, but will separate you and elevate you from the rest.

2. Inbound links to your site from relevant and trusted sites – Links from trusted sites; links from pages with a higher PR(4+) and less than 50 outbound links; links from pages with a lower PR and less than 10-25 outbound links (Keyword-rich anchor text as well). Preferably forums and blogs (or Viral Marketing) are some of the strongest referrers. This needs to be a permanent, ongoing project, and the links should be in place for at least 12-18 months for optimal effect. Getting 50 or 1000 this month, then dropping to just a few next month is a huge red flag for all the SE's. A steady link building scheme is required to earn top rankings. This means no link farm's.

Let me quickly explain about link farms and the way that the SE's see them. If you are actively and voluntarily participating in a linking scheme you are trying to manipulate their results. They value natural linking in their algorithms highly so they do not look link farms kindly now, or anytime in the future. It is one of the possible methods they have to value a website. This is why you hear so many of the pros say "content is king". One way or the other you need to attract traffic natuarally or the least make it look like you have.

3. Individual Title and Descriptions fro SEO - The argument is alive and well, and continuing as it has and will for several years. Title tags are how the SE's identify the relevancy of your page (compared to the end-users search query), not just in Organic ranking but in Paid Placement as well. Descriptions are how (organically) the SE's place a relevancy rating on your page.

4. SEO Site Architecture/Navigation – This includes menus, all the way to how each section on a site's pages are interlinked with each other.

5. Keyword Terminology - In your content, use 2 or 3 word keyword phrases that are likely to be searched for by users. Don't over-do-it, but be sure everything is in line and included - Keyword Title; Keyword phrase in description (1st line); Internal navigation keyword links; Fresh keyword rich content.

6. Universal XML Sitemaps for SEO - Providing an XML sitemap is one of the easiest things you can do to help search engines traverse your site. Google, Yahoo and MSN have all adopted this "standardized" tool. Having a sitemap and then submitting it through WEBMASTER Central will tell you not only when the crawl (usually 1-2 days) is complete, but also if there are any errors that the bots found.

7. Rich Media – Or concentrating on utilising video, image and audio search. Google is and I believe Yahoo and MSN will be offering big incentives to move into these areas, provided you can utilize this according to your current ad structure, demographics and product or service. Flash builders are a dime-a-dozen. Utilize them to create interactive ads.

8. Web 2.0 - Utilising blogs and forums more to improve search such as www.flickr.com , www.myspace.com , www.technorati.com, www.simpy.com, and others. Also put these "public bookmarks" buttons (AddMe to Google) in your site and your articles. This is quickly becoming a huge SEO tool.

9. Mobile Web - Google, Yahoo and MSN mobile are nearing and making your site accessible to all mobile web browsers is increasingly important. Remember when Firefox and Opera came out and everything didn't work or look right? (kinda like today on a much smaller scale). That's all there is to becoming mobile compliant.

10. Content Relevancy - ensuring everything is neat and relevant across a site. Irrelevant links and content could be detrimental. Map your entire site in a hand-written tree and link them accordingly. Then use this to create a sitemap, and add a link to it to your homepage, and/or your navigation.

11. Constant Monitoring of Paid and Organic Analytical Information - Re-evaluation and improvements based on user stats and new industry changes. Having an SEO expert in this field is vital. (e.g. If you have a PPC account with a few thousand keywords that are working for you that is proving successful, great job. If you want to double the traffic whilst cutting your costs in half, then you'll need an SEO expert to know what these analytics mean)

12. Become a More Trusted Site – Links are great but links from trusted sites are KING. If you need to work 10 times as long writing articles, creating Charitable Ebay auctions, endorsing a football team or a fraternity, do whatever you have to do to get links such as from a .edu or .gov. This will almost instantly boost your trust and especially your organic rankings. Other potential trust issues include GeoTrust and HackerSafe certifications or even going to a secure server.

A Word About Website Popularity - Yes, this is measured by all the search engines, and always has been. (Remember when you open your Google PPC account and it asked you about providing behaviorally statistical information?) Whether you use analytical and tracking tools or not, all the SE's do. This is part of the method they used to use before the more advanced algorithms of today. Unfortunately, you can't directly control this, but with the rest of these tips you can definitely improve it.

At the end of the day SEO (Search Engine Optimization) comes down to long hours and hard work.

The payoff through is that the first time you wake up in the middle of the night and check your rankings and your in the top position, or your clients site is at the top, all the hard work becomes worth the late nights and early mornings.

Good Luck.

Search Engine Ranking Density - Part 2

By Jose Nuñez

In the last part of this articles, I will discuss how much density percentage is good? Again, this will apply to both new and existing sites, and I am covering here what to know about keyword density.

The importance of keyword density.

Keyword density can be very beneficial when done right, but it can also have a very negative influence when overdone. This is known as "keyword stuffing". When you stuff keywords in your page, this will be detected and your site will get penalized for doing so. This could go as far as getting your entire site blacklisted from a particular search engine, if you are found keyword stuffing too many times.

There is no secret keyword formula.

No matter what you may think, or read on forums or even articles by such "SEO Gurus", there is no secret formula for keyword density. There are, however, certain guidelines that need to be followed, and they are available to the public form the search engines themselves. Keywords density is one of most critical elements in SEO, and if you can master it you get higher rankings for your site.

So what is the right keyword density?

Your keyword density must be right to improve your search engine ranking. The "ideal" keyword density will always help to achieve high rankings. But how much is too much? If too low, you will not get the maximum benefits, if too high your site might get flagged as spam… Ok, there is no "one number fits all" here, but based on real case studies, the average top ranking Google site averages basic 1.9% keyword density. I wouldn't go over 2%. This is an average value, and I am talking about basic percentages here, not complex. But it translates well to their complex values.

Search Engine Ranking Density - Part 1

By Jose Nuñez

This article will guide you through the main myths around keyword density and SEO. Even though keyword density should be a part of your SEO efforts, there is a lot of confusion about what "density" is and how to apply it properly.

There are 2 ways of calculating density.

The basic method consists of measuring the number of times a keyword appears on the page as a percentage of the total word count of that page. The complex method consists of measuring keyword density of the page plus the text components in meta tags: Title, Keywords, Alt Text, Description, and Comments. Most SEOs refer to the first method when talking about keyword density though. But, how do search engines measure keyword density? They actually use the complex method to measure it. I will explain later how to adjust to this.

Were should the keywords be used?

Diversify the density of your keywords in different areas of your page. Starting with the Title, and following with the beginning of the page, like in the headings, other sub-headings, and in the introductory paragraphs would certainly be of benefit. Every search engine algo is different, so you must choose an average keyword density that can make your site rank well in the top ten positions in the SERPs.

The importance of keyword density.

Keyword density can be very beneficial when done right, but it can also have a very negative influence when overdone. This is known as "keyword stuffing". Articles Search Engine Ranking - Part 2

By Jose Nuñez

The last part of this article will show you that getting targeted traffic is a direct result of this search engine ranking process. This will apply to both new and existing sites, and I am covering here what to do when writing articles.

The power of links and your article.

Use linking within your article to expand information sources or further detail topics. Reference pages, news sources, forums, bog posts, are example of resources you can offer and the user can choose to follow if needed. Now, it is equally important that your links are well defined and easy to spot by using standards when possible.

Apply SEO principles to your article.

It is important to create titles and headings that relate to what the article is about. Also, try to keep the article length to no more than 500 words, written with simple language, and providing clear and useful information. Always impart concrete knowledge to your readers. You should focus on the most important points in the topic, outlining the key areas of it. To do this, you can use headings, bold type and lists, like in the case of this particular article.

There is a lot more to article writing, but every situation is different, and for every website, the application of concepts discussed in these areas are different as well.

What is link building and how it can impact search engine rankings?

Search engine optimization comprises of On Page Optimization and Off Page Optimization. As of now Off Page optimization has higher significance than On Page optimization for search engines like Google, Yahoo & MSN.

What is Off Page Optimization?

Improving Link Popularity
Using keyword rich anchor text
Improving Google PR

What is Link Popularity & why is it required?

Link Popularity is defined as the number of incoming links your site domain has in each search engine. This is like the number of positive votes your site domain has on the internet. So, higher the number should be your primary goal. But you should make a note here that having a higher number of incoming links is not just enough. The quality of the incoming links matters a lot.

Search engines like Google, Yahoo & MSN would rank your website higher or lower in the search engine results depending on your link popularity.

How to check your Link Popularity?

In the search bar of any of the major search engines like Google, Yahoo or MSN type the following and press enter:

link:http://www.yoursitedomain.com (Please replace "yoursitedomain" with your website"s URL)

This would give you an idea as how many websites on the internet linking to your website.
What is link building & what are the different types?

Link building is the off page optimization strategy to improve your link popularity. There are basically two types of link building.

Reciprocal Link Building
Reciprocal linking means there is one incoming and one outgoing link, i.e. there is link exchange between your site and the linking site. You first link to the other website and request the webmaster if they would like to link back.

Non reciprocal Linking

Non reciprocal linking is to have only the incoming link without your site linking back. This would carry more value than the reciprocal link. But, this does not mean that reciprocal linking is not worth to do. It has it"s importance. Non reciprocal linking is better but a little tougher to achieve.

How to do reciprocal link building?

You need to find the websites which has similar theme as yours but not direct competition and request a link exchange. Once you find the right websites then you add a link to these websites on your links page and send an individual email to each one of these website owners.

Now, you should take care of the anchor text, also known as linking text. This is the text which is displayed on the other website linking to your website. This is how the HTML tag looks like:

Example:anchor text

The anchor text should be the best keyword describing your website and it has high value attached to it.

These are the three basic things you would need before you request a link exchange with the link partner websites.

Title: This is the anchor text
URL: The webpage URL you want the link to.
Description: Describing the purpose of your website in brief and do not forget to mention your keywords.

The next thing you should look into is the Google PR (Page Rank) of the linking webpage. The higher the Google PR the higher link value you get which would be converted to higher rankings in Google search engine.

Now, internet is an ocean and finding these websites, their Google PR and emailing them is a tough manual process. You can do this but may take years before you can build decent link popularity.
Is there a way out?

Yes! you bet!

There are quite a few SEO Software tools which would help you implement reciprocal link building. But making the decision as which SEO Software tool is right for you is the BIG question.

Each SEO software has it"s own limitations as what they can achieve. The best thing to do is if these SEO Software companies have a trial version, feel free to download and test it out. One another way is to read the honest SEO Software reviews at http://www.seo-softwares.com/seo-software-reviews.html. I personally recommend http://www.seo-softwares.com/seo-elite.html

Look out for my next article where I would talk about the easy ways to get a lot of non reciprocal links.

Tens Ways To Better Search Engine Rankings

There are millions of web sites trying to get listed inthe top 20 spots of the major search engines. Thatamounts to a lot of competition! I say if you can'tget listed at the top, indirectly get to the top.

How do you do this? Look up the top 20 web siteson the major search engines under the keywords andphrases people would find your web site. The keywould be to then advertise on those web sites.

The most expensive way would be to buy ad spaceon those web sites. If you don't want to spend anymoney, you could use the ten strategies below. These strategies may not apply to every web site.

1. Participate on their discussion boards. You couldpost questions, answer other peoples questions, andjoin in on conversations. Just include your signaturefile and link at the end of your messages.

2. Ask the web site owner if they would like a freeebook to giveaway to their visitors. You could havethem link to your web site or include your ad in thefree ebook.

3. Submit content to their web site. You could writearticles for their web site and include your resourcebox and link at the end of the article. If they publishit, you'll indirectly be at the top of the search engines.

4. Write an excellent article review of their web site, products or services. Then publish the review on yourweb site. E-mail the web site owner and tell him orher about it. They may link to your web site so theirvisitors read it.

5. Ask the owner of the web site if they would wantto trade advertising. If you don't get as much trafficas they do, you could throw in some extra incentives.

6. Propose a cross promotion deal with the web site. You both could promote each others products orservices together in one package deal. This means amention and link back to your web site.

7. Give the web site a testimonial for their product orservice. Include a little text link for your web site withthe testimonial. You never know; it could end up ontheir ad copy.

8. Post your advertisement on their free classified adsection on their web site. You want to be sure youhave an attractive headline so they will read your ad.

9. Post your text link on their free-for-all links page. You want to go back and post your link regularly soit stays towards the top.

10. Sign their guest books. You could leave a shortcompliment about their web site on their guest book.Just include your signature file and link at the end ofyour message.

Be an SEOptimized Web Designer

Yes you can brag about your mad design skills and your flashy site effects, but are people actually visiting your site? No matter how amazing you site looks like but if nobody even know about it and you are the only one visiting your site, it'll just be like a Mosa Lisa inside your room.

Why is it important?

There are three basic things that every site needs to have, a good design (site layout), good functionality (programming) and good traffic (site visits). A site may look good without a need for it to be database driven or written in ASP/PHP. A site may have complete and working programming capabilities. But a site that is unknown to people not good for business.

All websites are designed / developed for one common purpose: to be known. Whether you are trying to sell something, make people join your cause, or just for plain showoff, you need people to visit your site.

What do you need to do?

Read books (download online or from a bookstore) about SEO. Aaron's book, the SEO Book is a very good book to start learning SEO. Article sites also have 'SEO' in their categories, you should read those as well (like this article you are reading now).

You should also join SEO forums and groups and take part in the conversations and take notes from tips and tricks people share on the boards.

Use SEO tools that are readily available online. There are a lot of tools out there but you can start by using the free ones first and if you think you can afford more advanced software and you already know the basics, it'll be a good investment.

Practice. Try out doing on page optimization, submit your site to directories and check your stats every now and then. Soon you will see people visiting your site from search engine results. You may soon realize that the more backlinks you build the more popular your site will be.

What happens next?

After weeks and months of practice, you will learn that SEO is not that hard as you think. All you need to know are the target keywords, a database of link submission sites and a lot of time and patience to submit to as many sites as possible.

Remember, your sites may look great, but if no one visits it, it"s practically worthless.

Tips to Increase Ranking and Website Traffic

Here are some basic principles to be enforced to increase website traffic and search engine rankings.

Create a site with valuable content, products or services.

Place primary and secondary keywords within the first 25 words in your page content and spread them evenly throughout the document.

Research and use the right keywords/phrases to attract your target customers.

Use your keywords in the right fields and references within your web page. Like Title, META tags, Headers, etc.

Keep your site design simple so that your customers can navigate easily between web pages, find what they want and buy products and services.

Submit your web pages i.e. every web page and not just the home page, to the most popular search engines and directory services. Hire someone to do so, if required. Be sure this is a manual submission. Do not engage an automated submission service.

Keep track of changes in search engine algorithms and processes and accordingly modify your web pages so your search engine ranking remains high. Use online tools and utilities to keep track of how your website is doing.

Monitor your competitors and the top ranked websites to see what they are doing right in the way of design, navigation, content, keywords, etc.

Use reports and logs from your web hosting company to see where your traffic is coming from. Analyze your visitor location and their incoming sources whether search engines or links from other sites and the keywords they used to find you.

Make your customer visit easy and give them plenty of ways to remember you in the form of newsletters, free reports, reduction coupons etc.

Demonstrate your industry and product or service expertise by writing and submitting articles for your website or for article banks so you are perceived as an expert in your field.

When selling products online, use simple payment and shipment methods to make your customer"s experience fast and easy.

When not sure, hire professionals. Though it may seem costly, but it is a lot less expensive than spending your money on a website which no one visits.

Don"t look at your website as a static brochure. Treat it as a dynamic, ever-changing sales tool and location, just like your real store to which your customers with the same seriousness.
